Corn (Zea mays) is a type of flowering plant from the family Poaceae (Poaceae). It is an important crop used for grain, silage and green fodder. Corn was domesticated by indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica as early as prehistoric times. Later, along the central and southern Mexico, the Aztecs and Mayans cultivated many varieties used for food and other purposes.
